Quanta plastica naviga negli oceani del mondo?

Sulla base delle misurazioni effettuate in 24 spedizioni, uno studio recente stima una massa totale di detriti di plastica galleggiante di circa 268.000 tonnellate.

I risultati del modello stimano che il numero globale di pezzi di plastica fluttuanti sia di 5.250 miliardi con un peso totale di 268.940 tonnellate.

I due oceani dell'emisfero settentrionale contengono il 56% di tutte le particelle e il 57% del peso totale. Nell'emisfero australe l'Oceano Indiano sembra avere un conteggio e un peso delle particelle maggiore rispetto agli oceani del Sud Atlantico e del Pacifico meridionale messi insieme.
