Spesso la prima causa delle malattie è la nostra alimentazione. Tuttavia, proprio le malattie provenienti dal cibo - in particolare quelle causate da batteri, virus, parassiti e funghi - sono facilmente evitabili con poche semplici regole nella gestione sicura degli alimenti. Per questo l'OMS ha pubblicato cinque regole-chiave che spiegano i principi fondamentali che ogni individuo dovrebbe conoscere per prevenire le malattie di origine alimentare.
